  • What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction groups are regularly scheduled, peer-assisted review sessions for classes that are known to be difficult for students. At OCC Southfield, this has included classes such as Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Math and Psychology. Study groups provide an environment in which students interact with one another and the peer Supplemental Instruction leader (SI) to further discuss class content and to clarify what others read, heard, and wrote down during class

  • Who are SIs?

Supplemental Instruction leaders are people who have successfully completed the course and have been trained in how to lead study groups. They frequently have been recommended to the SI Supervisor by faculty members.

  • What do SIs do?

The SIs attend class with the students and plan appropriate activities for the study group. They focus not only on WHAT to learn but also on HOW to learn by sharing techniques that can also be used in other classes.

  • When and Where do Supplemental Instruction groups take place?

Leaders usually hold the one-hour study sessions an hour before or an hour after class right in the classroom.

  • Why Attend Supplemental Instruction study groups?

Studies have shown that students who regularly attend supplemental instruction study groups get better grades. They also learn study habits and skills while making friends that last a lifetime.
