For nearly a decade, Oakland Community College has provided students with a unique service – the College Transfer Center (CTC). The CTC offers students accurate, accessible, up-to-date information on which OCC courses will transfer to which four-year college or university programs.

Counselors Sue Murdock and Nicole Kassab, along with support staff, run the CTC at OCC’s Highland Lakes Campus. Since most students who transfer only remain at OCC for a year or two, CTC counselors stress the importance of students working with the Center as soon as possible to make sure every class counts toward that transfer.

But you need to ask more than "Will this course transfer?" You need to make a top choice and alternate choices for the four-year schools you’d ultimately like to attend, and you need to know what program you’d like to transfer into. "Many colleges have limits on how many transfer students they accept into popular programs, such as Education and Business. And all colleges have very specific requirements of what classes can and can’t be transferred to meet the requirements for a major," Murdock explains.

The CTC has curriculum guides and transfer equivalency lists for hundreds of colleges and universities, including more than 30 public, private and community colleges and universities in Michigan. The Center can provide information on out-of-state schools as well. And if you have questions on tuition, housing costs, or even on scholarship opportunities, the CTC is the place to turn. All of this information is continually updated and shared with counselors at OCC’s five campuses.

Why you need to know about MACRAO

The Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (MACRAO) has developed an agreement among the state’s two- and four-year colleges to assist students who complete an associate’s degree in transferring credit to a four-year institution. The basic idea is that if you completed specified general studies courses in English, social science, natural science and humanities, you will have satisfied the basic requirements for the first two years of Michigan four-year colleges that have signed on to the agreement
