Basic Speaking and Listening Skills

This course is designed for students with no prior speech training or those who need more practice to improve basic listening and speech communication skills. Students will participate in assessing their skill levels at the beginning of the semester and establishing goals for the semester. Areas of emphasis will include active and empathic listening, initiating conversations, building self confidence, following oral directions, asking and answering questions, paraphrasing, reducing shyness, effective nonverbal communication, basic oral presentations, articulation, pronunciation and elimination of vocalized pauses.
