2001 - 2002 DMAlliance Directions
Focus on our uniqueness: Linking education with industry in dialogue
Maximize our relationships with industry associations
and foster higher level contacts with corporations:
- Ask appointed American Society of Body Engineering (ASBE) and Society
of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) representatives to work with us to
strengthen our industry (and in the process our virtual regional advisory)
committee leadership by establishing additional significant company
links.
- Bob Nichols of Kettering University has agreed to take leadership
in establishing additional significant company links.
- Explore working relationships with SAE and the National Association
of Manufacturing similar to the ones which have been developed with ASBE
and SME
Staff Development:
- Establish a college sponsored series of events that would deepen educator
understanding of the current state of the automotive industry in Southeastern
Michigan - go beyond teaching faculty to include counselors, administrators
and staff. Some examples:
- Spring Conference at Henry Ford Community College provides new depth
of understanding to a broader audience
- Move forward with meeting of Deans of Engineering and Deans of technology
and perhaps appropriate secondary personnel - or sponsor
similar sessions regionally for appropriate personnel at local Community
Colleges.
These sessions would have to be carefully planned and the discussion
would be led by very knowledgeable industry representatives. The objective
would be better informed administrators and bridge building between
University and Community College Deans, and Community College Deans
and Secondary Administrators. Macomb Community College has indicated
a willingness to fund this type of activity.
- Publish in depth in-service opportunities for teachers as they become
available. E.g., invite Southeastern Michigan Design teachers to attend
GD&T sessions sponsored by Oakland Community College and Oakland
Schools.
- Support a meeting of Design teachers at the Community College level
to better understand General Motors orientation on Designing Engineer.
to continue to develop curriculum in response to what is happening in
the industry and to move toward a core curriculum across Southeastern Michigan.
- Sponsor at least one activity at each community college to maintain
presence of DMA in all areas of Southeastern Michigan.
DMA Administrative Improvements:
- Work to improve website. Support is needed.
- Improve our communication fanout to be able to easily inform all our
colleagues of opportunities that become available.
- Make the administrative committee more representative by including
at least one university and one employer representative.
- Change the role of the articulation and career development committee
to place more emphasis on supporting the career development of students
and focus more on curriculum integration leaving college-university
articulation to the registrars and specialist in this area. This committee
would take responsibility for the Deans meeting.
