Personal Protective Equipment

Employees at Oakland Community College may encounter physical and/or chemical
hazards during the workday, depending upon job assignments and tasks. These
hazards will be controlled by using, in order of preference, engineering
controls, administrative controls, and/or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
PPE are designed to protect employees from serious injuries or illnesses
resulting from contact with physical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical
hazards, among other things.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Michigan
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) have established
regulations governing the use of PPE in the workplace. These regulations can be

This PPE Program provides guidelines and procedures for the following:
- Hazard assessment
- Equipment selection, general
- Equipment selection, laboratories
- Equipment selection, students
- Protective devices
- Cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and storage
- Employee training
- Recordkeeping
This program is intended to address the use of PPE by Oakland Community College
employees only, and is not intended to be applied directly to protecting
students from contact with hazards. The Oakland Community College Student
Environmental Health and Safety Handbook addresses student PPE use.
