BASIC
PRACTICAL EXAM CANDIDATE INFORMATION
You will probably
be nervous before starting this exam, but that feeling usually passes once you
begin the skills. All of these stations are designed following the Basic
EMT State Objectives which were used in your EMT class. If you
mastered these skills during class you should have no trouble with this exam.
Professional
behavior is expected at this state exam. Inappropriate language or
behavior is unacceptable. Any candidate behaving unprofessionally will be
asked to leave the exam site and will not be allowed to complete the exam.
You can expect to
be tested on the following:
Airway
Station:
You will be tested on your ability to insert an ETDLA(Combitube).
You will also be tested on one of the following four skills listed for
airway/oxygenation: airway adjuncts, patient ventilation, oxygen, or
suction. The second skill will be randomly assigned.
CPR/BLS
Station: At
this station you will be randomly assigned one of the six skills to
demonstrate: adult or infant
obstruction, 1 or 2 rescuer CPR, infant CPR, or AED. You should use
protective barriers.
Trauma
Skills:
You will be randomly
assigned one splinting skill and one backboarding skill at this station. You
will work with a partner and will also have two first responders when you are
moving the patient to the long backboard. You should use protective
barriers. The time frames for these
skills are: splinting 5 minutes, long backboarding 5 minutes, short
backboarding 10 minutes.
Patient
Management:
At this station you will
be evaluating a simulated victim. You will have five minutes to access the
patient, find the injuries, and verbalize the treatment which would be done.
When you are finished with your assessment the evaluator will ask how
serious the patient's condition is and the order of treatment of the injuries
found. You will then be asked a set of vital signs to determine your
accuracy. You must pass both the assessment and treatment phases of this
station. Prior to this station you will be given a handout providing more
details.
The evaluators
will not tell you whether you passed or failed a station. When you have
completed all of the stations, your exam will be scored. The Regional
Coordinator will inform you of your results, and you will be allowed to review
them.
If you fail four
or more skills, you will not be allowed to retest on that same day. You will need to retest
the entire practical exam on another date.
If
you fail three skills or less, you will be allowed to retest those skills
on the same day after initial testing is completed. You will be given a chance to
review problem areas and will have a different evaluator for the retest.
If you pass the skill(s) the second time, you will be finished with the exam.
If you do not pass the second attempt, you will need to retake the entire
practical exam on another date.
