EMT-Basic

The OCC Basic EMT Program is offered five times per year. Students must attend an orientation session, apply to the program, and successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check prior to registration. Fall and Winter semesters the Program runs for 15 weeks, twice a week for four hour blocks each day, followed by a two hour lab. A night section is also run for 15 weeks, meeting three evenings a week in four hour blocks.

In the Summer I semester, an EMT Academy runs for five weeks beginning just after the OCC Fire Academy. This program is accelerated and meets Monday through Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm, followed by three weeks of clinical shifts. Required courses are listed as follows and are recommended to be taken concurrently. Students must be accepted into the program and attend an orientation prior to registration. Part time academic schedules must be approved by the Program Director.

Upon completion of the Basic EMT courses, the student will be eligible to take the national Registry exam to qualify for state licensing as a EMT-Basic.

EMS 1010   Basic EMT I     (4 hrs lecture, 2 hrs lab) 5 Credits
EMS 1020   Basic EMT II    (4 hrs lecture, 2 hrs lab) 5 Credits 
EMS 1100   Basic EMT Clinical  (concurrent registration with EMS 1020) 1 Credit
EMS 1200   Rescue/ Extrication  (or state-approved certificate) 1 Credit

The length of the program for students who plan on going on to paramedic courses is dependent upon when they they start their Basic EMT Program.
