General Description/Summary of Purpose:
The Manager is responsible for oversight and management of library technical services. The Manager reports to the Dean of Libraries.Duties/Illustrative Tasks:
This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required.1. Manage library technical services: material acquisitions, cataloging, authority work; database management on the Integrated Library Systems (ILS), physical processing, serials, and preservation. Plan and manage library workflows to maximize quality and efficiency.
2. Develop strategic directions for library technical services in relation to current and emerging technologies, and national development and trends. Assess operational and fiscal impact on the Libraries and maintain continuous communication with the Dean and library employees.
3. Maintain current knowledge of the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET), Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), Library of Congress (LC) standards and other library resources as identified by the supervisor to ensure compliance.
4. Serve as the DALNET Project Manager: attend meetings and workshops, as needed; serve on appropriate sub-committees and task forces. Provide updates to library staff on DALNET initiatives.
5. Serve as contact for OCLC and Michigan Library Consortium (MLC) products and services used by the Libraries in support of library technical services operations.
6. Coordinate campus-based ILS database management projects with library faculty and staff.
7. Develop and maintain appropriate reports from the ILS.
8. Perform original cataloging and classification of print, media, and electronic resources on the ILS and OCLC.
9. Develop content for technical documentation. Conduct workshops for library faculty and staff as needed.
10. Manage supplies, equipment, and documentation for library technical services operations; investigate options for vendor services and make recommendations.
11. Report and track ILS problems related to areas of oversight; test ILS modules for system upgrades and new releases. Manage security authorizations for library technical services activities.
12. Explore, recommend, and integrate current and emerging library technologies to enhance and streamline library technical services operations. Work with vendor technical support to ensure product compliance.
13. Supervise library technicians and learning resources technicians, including assigning and distributing duties, training and monitoring performance.
14. Serve on campus and college-wide committees; participate in the development of college initiatives; assist in the formation of policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.AND
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of management or supervisory experience in a library. Experience with multi-cultural students and staff preferred.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:- Knowledge of and experience with MARC, OCLC, AACR2, CONSER, LCSH, LC classification and LC authority files and other library resources
- Knowledge of FRBR and RDA
- Ability to oversee technical services operations (cataloging, database management, acquisitions, serials, and book processing) in an automated library environment
- Interpersonal and communication skills to work and collaborate in a collegial team environment and to work effectively with library faculty and support staff, information technology employees, administrators, publishers, and vendors
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices
- Skill in both verbal and written communication
- Ability to work as a team player in a multi-cultural diverse working environment
