Essay Requirements

  • Length between 1,000 and 1,250 words. Student contact information and references are NOT included in the total word count.
  • Typed using double line spacing
  • 12 point font size
  • 1 inch margins (top, bottom, left and right)
  • Page numbered (lower right)
  • When and where appropriate, proper citation of references should be included using MLA or APA format.
  • Essays containing plagiarized text will automatically be disqualified.
  • Essays and cover sheets must be submitted electronically on or before 11:59 p.m. (EST) on Monday, March 1, 2010 as an e-mail attachment to essay@oaklandcc.edu

Essay Submission Requirements

  • Submitted essays must meet all competition requirements in order to be considered for any award.
  • All essays must be submitted as an e-mail attachment to essay@oaklandcc.edu on or before Monday, March 1, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. (EST).
  • Essays must be submitted in MS-Word or Word Perfect readable format.
  • A completed Student Information Cover Sheet must be submitted at the same time as the essay: This form can be downloaded from www.oaklandcc.edu/essay

Eligibility

The following eligibility criteria will be applied to all students submitting an essay:

  • Students can submit only one essay for the 2009-10 academic year contest.
  • Students are eligible for only one award during the 2009-10 academic year contest.
  • Verification of current enrollment in at least one credit hour during fall 2009 or winter 2010 will be conducted at the time of essay submission.
  • OCC employees along with their family members and dependents are not eligible.

Awards

  • First place $1,000, second place $750 and third place $500.
  • Five additional “honorable mention” awards of $200 will be granted. These awards will be in the form of an OCC Bookstore Gift Certificate.
  • Winners will be announced on Monday, April 26, 2010.
  • Essay winners will be recognized at an Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 and their essays will be posted to the college’s website.
  • Submission of an Essay does not guarantee an award.
