WILL THE CREDITS TRANSFER?
Since about 65% of OCC freshmen intend to transfer to another school, lots of people talk about transfer… but what does it mean? What it comes down to is this: When you move from one school to another, will the new college or university accept the credits (courses) from your previous one so that you don’t have to repeat any courses? If it does then the courses and credits are transferable. OCC accepts credit for any course from an accredited college or university that is the same or similar to a course that OCC offers. This assumes that the student passed the course with a grade of C or better. OCC will not transfer credit from Harvard unless the student passed the course. Other colleges or universities will do the same for courses taught at OCC. For example: ENG 1510 at OCC is a freshman level English Composition course that transfers to any college in the state as its freshman English Composition.
HOW MANY CREDITS WILL TRANSFER?
Colleges and universities vary in the total number of courses or credits that they will transfer. You can transfer to another school as few as 1 credit or as many as 90 credits. Most schools limit the total transferable credits to 62. In general it takes a minimum of about 62 credits to earn an Associates Degree and about 124 credits for a Bachelor’s Degree. In short, this means that you can earn about half or more of your Bachelor’s Degree at OCC and then apply and transfer to another college to finish your degree. Incidentally, when you apply as a transfer student, the minimum grade point required is lower than what was necessary from high school and your high school record is much less important. In addition, the cost savings as you know from the previous page can be spectacular. Finally, when you transfer, the school that you transfer to doesn’t transfer your grade or grade point, only the credit. So you start with a fresh grade point average at your new institution.
The counselors at each campus have up to date information on which courses transfer to which universities.
