About Oaxaca
Oaxaca (pronounced /wa-ha-ka/) is the most diverse state in Mexico. It has peaks that reach more than 3,000 meters high, caverns that are among
the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, secluded forests, and sunlit valleys that hold the majority of the people. Oaxaca is rich in traditions
and customs and has the largest ethnic population found in the Republic of Mexico. Oaxaca has all of the features of modern progress—communications,
transportation, and health care—especially in its capital. However, it has not lost that air of innocence that characterizes it, of a community
anchored in a carefree time, which is due, above all else, to the robust presence of its indigenous population: sixteen ethnic groups who speak
more than 150 dialectal variants, who proudly preserve their traditions and lifestyles, who give cultural plurality to the state, and are the
finest part of its wealth: its people.

About the Exchange Program
To enroll in the OCC/Oaxaca Exchange Program, you must also enroll in the four-credit Directed Studies in Spanish class. The credits for this
class are transferrable to any college or university in Michigan.
While in the state capital of Oaxaca, you will attend class (at the various participating schools) three days a week, for five hours a day.
On the other days, you will have ample opportunity to improve your Spanish while you visit historical sites, participate in celebrations such
as the Guelaguetza, vacation on the coast, taste the cuisine, and experience the excitement of the art markets, all while enjoying the amazing
opportunity to share in the lives and comforts of a traditional Mexican home.

Fostering
Tradition and Growth
Since 1992
Since 1992, OCC students have had the opportunity to spend four weeks in summer with a host family in
Oaxaca, Mexico, experiencing daily life in a different culture at first hand while earning college credit.
In spring, OCC hosts students from Oaxaca who come here to spend a month with a host family.
Supported by a consortium of schools in both Oakland County and Oaxaca, the exchange offers a unique opportunity
to experience another language, history, landscape, climate, and culture.
All the participants gain an invaluable experience that broadens their mind and opens their heart.

About the Exchange Program
While in Michigan, students from Oaxaca will attend classes two days a week, for five hours a day, studying English Writing/Grammar in the mornings
and Conversation/Listening in the afternoons. They will also attend courses on each of the OCC campuses to sample the programs offered by the
college and experience different teaching styles.
On the other three days of the week, students will travel to and learn about historic places within the Metro Detroit area and beyond. Students
will also travel by train to spend a weekend in Chicago to see the Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, Shedd Aquarium,
Art Institute, and John Hancock tower.
While they are in Michigan, students will live with an American family (usually a family with children approximately the same age as the Oaxacan
student), sharing family meals, traditions, and religious observations. The students will also engage socially with students from the International
Academy, Lahser High School and Oakland Community College.
Students will have easy access to the Internet while on campus, and usually in their host family’s home, as well.
