Health Care Administration Program General Information

The Health Care Administration Program has a one year certificate option, and a two year Associate Degree option available. Students who have completed either option are eligible to take the Michigan Nursing Home Administrator's Examination to become licensed by the State of Michigan.

Program Outline

 The following Health Care Administration (HCA) courses are required for both options:

HCA 1000- Intro. to Health Care Administration HCA 2150 Labor Practices in Health Facilities
HCA 1110 Health Facility Maintenance & Sanitation HCA 2200 Fiscal Management in health Care Facilities
HCA 1210 Principle of Nursing Home Operation HCA 2250 Legal Aspects of Health Care Service Mgmt.
HCA 1230 Patient Care and Auxiliary Relationships in Health Facilities HCA 2300 Problem and Policies of Health Care Facilities
HCA 2100 Personal Management in Health Care Facilities HCA 240.3-6 Externship

An assigned externship is required for both the certificate and the associate degree options. The number of hours required for the externship is based on prior healthcare supervisory experience.

In addition to the HCA courses, students who wish to earn the Health Care Administration Certificate must also complete the following courses: English 1510- English Composition I,  MED 1103- Medical Terminology, and PSY 2510- Intro. to Psychology

For students who wish to earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science- Health Care Administration must also complete the following courses and fulfill all the general education requirements as stated in the College Catalog.

BUS 2530- Principles of Management
ENG 1510- English Composition I
MED 1103- Medical Terminology
POL 1510- American Government
PSY 2510- Intro. to Psychology
SOC 2550 Sociology of the Aging OR
GRN 2510 Intro. to Gerontology
BUS 2700 Business and Labor Relations OR
PSY 2630 Human Relations & Organizational Behavior
1 Credit Physical Education
3 Credit Hours Fine Arts/Humanities

Application Procedures for Admission to the Program:

  1. Apply to the College.
  2. Designate HCA as your curriculum on the application.
  3. Have transcripts from other colleges or universities sent to OCC's Office of the Registrar.
  4. Have all College records on file at the Royal Oak Campus Records Office.
