Health Insurance
Travel Assistance Coverage
All F-1 students are required to have travel assistance coverage through MEDEX Assistance Corporation. The cost for the program ($15.00 per semester)
will be automatically added to your tuition bill. Coverage is in effect from August 1 to July 31 of each year.
MEDEX is NOT a health insurance plan. It will NOT pay for hospitalization, doctors’ bills or medical tests. However, it will provide the following travel assistance benefits for F-1 students and F-1 student dependents:
- Emergency medical evacuation where adequate treatment is not available near OCC.
- Repatriation of mortal remains to home country.
- Referrals for medical/dental care in the U.S.
- Emergency travel arrangements
International students please download the Program Description and MEDEX Identification Card. The ID card will identify you as an OCC student and give the plan number.

MEDEX Frequently Asked Questions
OCC strongly recommends that all students purchase health insurance coverage.
Health care costs are extremely expensive in the United States (U.S.) and the federal or state of Michigan government does
not provide medical care assistance to F-1 students.
There are numerous health insurance plans to choose from. Students should research their options on the internet, by phone or any other means. Below are links to some plans. Brochures for the plans below are available at the campus International Student Offices but are also downloadable immediately from the links.
Read all health insurance brochures very carefully and understand the coverage and exclusions. Note that the premium amount (cost) will vary according to the applicant’s age.
Students may want more comprehensive health care coverage and are not limited to the policies that appear below. Students should choose the plan that best meets their needs.
