Social Security Numbers

For OCC F-1 Students

Social Security Administration regulations have changed with regard to F-1 international students as of October 13, 2004. F-1 students are able to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) only when they can show proof of a job offer. When requesting the SSN, you must present two letters to the Social Security Administration office confirming the job offer: one from the employer, and one from the "Designated School Official", or International Student Advisor.

It is important to note that while it can take up to two weeks to receive the SSN card by mail, you can be given a receipt from the Social Security Administration office showing the Social Security Number within 24 hours of requesting the number. When you submit your application for the Social Security Number, please remember to ask about returning the next business day for a SECOND RECEIPT (the first will be given to you when you hand in your documents). The second receipt, with the Social Security Number printed on it, is sufficient for you
to begin your student assistant employment, according to the OCC Payroll Department.
