Module 4: Effective Searching on the Web

Effective Searching on the Web: Summary

WEB-SEARCHING RULES TO LIVE BY

bullet Get to know your search engine.  Read the help screens and use those tricks (plus sign, minus sign, quotation marks, site search in Google, etc.) that focus your search.

bullet Use more than one search engine.  No single search engine covers even half of what's on the web.

bullet If at first you don't succeed, try some other words to describe your subject.

bullet Watch out for the paid sites that rise to top of some web searches.  They're not necessarily the best; they're just bought their way in.

bullet Use good subject directories and searchable databases.

bullet Take advantage of what your OCC Libraries have to offer:

bullet Internet Search guidance, including links to some very good subject directories

bullet Subjects A-Z, a subject directory geared to the OCC curriculum

bullet Articles/Databases, millions of full-text articles in searchable databases

bullet If you need help, Ask a Librarian!
