How to Download and Stay Legal!:
Downloading Instructions
Using OCC Library Databases

Not all databases allow you to save persistent URLs; among those that do, there are different methods. Listed below are the specific instructions for each database. Keep in mind that your PURLs will only be accessible from off-campus if you glean them using the Bb or Educator Resources navigation buttons or the For Faculty page.

InfoTrac/Gale | EBSCOhost | FirstSearch | JSTOR | ProQuest

InfoTrac and Gale Databases - Access these databases through Bb's Library Resources button or Educator's Resource Center>OCC Library Databases navigation link or the Articles/Databases link on the For Faculty page.

An InfoMark at the top of any page indicates that the URL of the page persists even when the session is over. Persistent URLs (PURLs) can be bookmarked for future reference or copied into an electronic mail message or onto a Web page.

Note: For InfoMarks to work, your browser must be set to accept cookies.

InfoMarks should be reasonably stable, but the journal selection and negotiated

rights (for text and/or full content display) in a collection can change without

notice. It's a good idea to verify your saved links from time to time.

Articles
Another use for InfoMarks is to create a "live" reference or link to an article. To create a reference link, locate the article and copy the URL or click the InfoMark icon to retrieve the PURL.
Alternately, you can click on the download icon to save the article to your computer.

Reading List
You can create a reading list or similar application by performing a search, selecting or "marking" the boxes next to the desired citations from the result, clicking the "Marked Items" icon, then copying the URL or clicking on the InfoMark icon to save the PURL of that page.  The link will provide a shortcut back to a list of the selected citations. From there, articles can be retrieved. Alternately, you can download the Marked Items list and save it on your computer.

Predefined Searches
One common use for InfoMarks is to create a predefined search. Any combination of searching and limiting that produces citations can be saved. A predefined search could be as narrow as a specific search or as broad as, for example, all articles from a particular journal. Each time the saved link is selected, the search will be run anew, so the results are always fresh. To create a predefined search, click on the InfoMark or save the URL at the citation list, the page with a list of matching articles.

EBSCOhost - Access this database through Bb's Library Resources button or Educator's Resource Center>OCC Library Databases navigation link or the Articles/Databases link on the For Faculty page.

Articles - HTML
From the citation, article or folder, click the "Save to Disk" icon. The Save Manager appears. Choose to save the HTML full-text or HTML links to articles, or both.
  • HTML Full Text – Indicates that the HTML Full Text of the article (if available) should be saved.

  • HTML links to articles – Locate the Persistent Link (PURL) at the bottom of the record, then cut and paste it into Bb or Educator.

Alternately, to save the article to your computer, click File>Save As from the browser menu.

Articles - PDF
From the citation or folder, click the "Save to Disk" icon. The Save Manager appears. Choose the HTML links to articles to locate the Persistent Link (PURL) at the bottom of the record. Alternately, you can open the article in PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader, and use the Reader's "Save a Copy" icon.

Predefined searches

  • From a Result List, click the Add search to folder link at the end of the search query displayed above the Find field. The search query is now saved in the folder as a persistent link to a search.

  • Click on any of the Folder icons. From the persistent links to searches area of the folder, click on the Save to Disk icon. The Save Manager appears. A Links to Searches sub-tab is displayed.

  • In the folder, Remove these items from folder after saving appears. Indicate whether you want to empty the folder of all items after saving.

  • Click Save; otherwise, click Back.

  • From your browser menu, click File>Save As. Be sure to save as an HTML or text file.

  • There is an option to cut and paste the PURL directly.
