Oakland Community College now has thousands of books available full text and online for immediate access here or at home via a system called "NetLibrary."  The college has purchased hundreds of ebooks in the areas of the health sciences, computers, English and general reference sources.  In addition, the Library of Michigan has made thousands of other titles available for use. Below are instructions for setting up an account and some FAQs.

How to Set up an Account: In order to access any of these books, all you have to do is register with NetLibrary.  If you're on-campus, go to the web site of NetLibrary and select "create account." If you're off-campus, go through this portal to NetLibrary instead and do the same. Once you have an account, you can access the NetLibrary collection from anywhere with Internet access by just going to netlibrary.com or by clicking on the links above.

Frequently asked questions:

» What else do I need?
A valid e-mail account is required.

» Do I have to be on-line to access the electronic books?
Yes.

» Can more than one person view a book at a time?
No, access is one person per copy. There is some duplication between the OCC collection and the one from the Library of Michigan, so a second copy may be available.

» Are the titles of the electronic books in the OCC libraries' on-line catalog?
Yes. You may discover ebooks when you search for print books in the OCC Library Catalog. Or you may search specifically for electronic books using Power Search in the library catalog.  After entering your search terms in the first section of the power search screen, go down to "Limiting and Sorting" section.  From the pop-up menu of "All Formats" select e-books and enter your search.

The catalog records for these ebooks include clickable URLs, which take you to netLibrary, but you will still need a netLibrary account to check ebooks out.

» Can I put a "reserve" or "hold" on a title that is in use?
No, but you can request to be notified when the title is available.

» Can I print from the e-books?
Yes, but not extensively. There is software that monitors excessive printing.

» Can I download an ebook?
No.

» Can I "cut-and-paste" material?
Yes, although the material appears in "boxes" and will need to be edited.

» Will more titles be added?
Yes, the Library of Michigan is continuing to add titles and OCC may add to their collection in the future, depending on use and other factors.

» Is HELP available?
Yes, HELP is available:
