NEW BOOKS
by Ron Healy

Your OCC Libraries are constantly updating their collections of books, based on curricular needs and advances in knowledge.  If you haven't visited an OCC Library or checked the library catalog lately, you might be pleasantly surprised at how many new and useful books are in the collections.  Now you can keep abreast of new books by perusing our new-books lists.  Subject searches are available, and the lists are updated dynamically as new books arrive, so you'll be sure to see the latest titles.  Look for the link in the box of "Handy Links" at the bottom of the Libraries' home page.  Or link directly to the lists from here.

FACULTY: Have you recommended a book lately?  Feel free.  Our faculty page has a link to a form which you can use to recommend materials.  Look for the For Faculty page on the right side of our home page.  Or link directly to the form from here.  We look forward to hearing from you.

VIDEO LISTS
by Ron healy

Now you can link to complete lists of videos and DVDs held at individual OCC libraries.  The lists are based on the library catalog and therefore contain new videos as they are received and cataloged.  Look for the link in the box of "Handy Links" at the bottom of the Libraries' home page.  Or link to the lists from here.

OCC LIBRARIES ARE ASSETS TO LEARNING
by Carol Benson

"I love being able to access the library from home and ProQuest is awesome! It saves me so much time on my research."

Nursing student, HL

"I have been delighted with the services and professionalism of our Royal Oak library staff. They have helped me locate books and articles for my college work. They have also interacted effectively with my students on a variety of special projects."

Debra Rowe,
Psychology Department, RO

"If I had not become a psychologist, I would have majored in Library Science.  Consequently I feel very much 'at home' whenever I visit any of the OCC libraries and have always had my needs met whether it is getting a book sent through interlibrary loan, asking that a specific book be ordered or obtaining help with research... If anyone wonders, tell them that Nichols loves the libraries!"

Don Nichols,
Psychology Department, AH

The goal of OCC's libraries is to let students, faculty, staff and Oakland County residents learn more about the college's five libraries - their hours, collections, online resources and the technology they have available.
Articles in college publications assist in this process, as do PDTC sessions for faculty and regular "Success Seminars" that help students learn to navigate the libraries' collections and resources.
The easy-to-use OCC Library website (www.oaklandcc.edu/library) is the gateway to the web-based catalog, that allows users to use subject directories to find quality, credible resources and to search hundreds of databases - many of them full-text - to meet their research needs. Online, library users can find listings of OCC's entire collection of books, videos, CDs, magazines, journals and newspapers; see if a particular resource is checked out; renew materials online; and use the MiLE service to request interlibrary loans from non-OCC libraries throughout the state.
OCC students, faculty and staff agree that the college's libraries are a tremendous resource for research and learning. With proper identification, the college's huge array of articles, databases, internet search engines, and scholarly and professional subject directories can be used on or off campus. So whether you're looking for an entire article from Harper's Weekly magazine from 1857 to 1889 (accessible through the HarpWeek database); the JSTOR scholarly journal archive; ProQuest nursing journals; or StatUSA: National Trade Databank, a highly specialized database used by business majors, you'll most likely locate it on the OCC library website.
"The best validation of the SF Campus Library is in the comments of the students. We regularly hear about the helpfulness of the library staff. We can't emphasize more the value of the SF Campus Library to the success of a diverse student
population."

Youmin Lee and Bonita Myrand,
English Department, SF

"Students of speech communication are expected to support their ideas with outside credible sources...And although I can require certain types of sources, I can not keep up with the ever- changing world of research. That is where OR library [staff has] stepped forward... Without their updates I can only imagine how frustrated my students would be."

Sandra Thornton,
Speech Department, OR

"ESL is very new to the HL Campus. When I arrived, the faculty and staff at our library welcomed me with open arms and answers to numerous questions. They've provided essential support, both to me and to my students."

Jennifer Craft,
ESL, HL

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND STAY LEGAL
&
OTHER LIBRARY SERVICES FOR FACULTY
by Ann Walaskay

The OCC Libraries now have web pages designed to assist faculty who use articles from magazines, journals, or newspapers as required or optional readings for their classes. Instead of worrying about securing copyright permissions from publishers, you can take advantage of electronic subscription databases from the Libraries.  The Libraries have already paid for the subscriptions, many of which include license agreements for use by students or for posting full-text on Blackboard courses.  These electronic databases have literally hundreds of thousands of articles, many full-text. Databases are listed on the Libraries’ Articles/Databases page.  The details of our electronic licensing agreements are collected on one web page, dubbed Copyright Permissions. Look here to confirm the terms for using materials from each database.

Instructors can use permanent or “durable” links to articles (“PURLs”) and post them on personal websites or Blackboard courses.  If you have ever tried to cut and paste an URL for an article into a web page, you may have noticed that the link can be very long and usually does not work after a day or so.  That link was dynamically created at the time of the search.  On the other hand, durable links, or “PURLs,” can last months or longer.  To bring up the articles, the student simply clicks on the link and the articles will appear.  Several major database publishers (Gale, Ebsco, and Proquest) are now offering durable links to articles.  Instructions are found on another library web page, aptly called, How to Download and Stay Legal!: A Primer for Faculty on Creating Your Own eReserves Using OCC Library Databases.

Links to Copyright Permissions and How to Download… can be found on the For Faculty page, a major link on the OCC Libraries Home PageFor Faculty also features:

  • How to log into OCC databases using your OCC ID and PW

  • How to set up Library Orientations for your classes

  • How to request the purchase of library materials or add web sites

  • How to place materials on Course Reserve in the Libraries

  • Current information on training for faculty

For more about OCC Libraries visit our web page About the Libraries.  Or, please call or email the friendly librarians at your OCC campus (see campus links at the top of this page for contact information).  We love to connect with our fellow faculty members!

Please note that when you are on-campus, the easiest way to connect is to select the link to "Articles / Databases" from the Libraries' home page.  No ID or password is necessary.
