Newspaper Scene is Changing

Now that summer is done, you may be unable to enjoy reading your local paper at the breakfast table or your favorite coffee shop! Newspapers are in turmoil in the Detroit metro area and other major newspaper markets across the U.S.

Here’s what’s happening with many local papers (subject to change!):

Detroit Free Press and Detroit News

Both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News are published 7 days a week, however, the basic subscription delivers the print paper only on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday with the option to have the other days sent in the mail or purchased in stores. There is an “E-edition” that is available for subscribers that requires a password to view.
Besides the “E-editions”, there are web sites for each paper, as well as the option to have
“e-newsletters” for specific topics such as headlines, editorials, sports, and auto sent directly to the requestor’s email.
Print copies of both the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News are available daily in most OCC Campus Libraries. Come and visit us! Please confirm with your local campus library.
Note: OCC students and staff can do free searches for back issues of articles by topic or date in the Detroit Free Press from 1995 to the present in OCC's Proquest Database and to the Detroit News from 1999 to the present in OCC’s Newsbank Database (see Find Articles/Databases from Library Home Page).

The Birmingham Eccentric (for Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Bingham Farms and Franklin) and the South Oakland Eccentric (for Royal Oak, Clawson, Berkley, Southfield, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods and Ferndale) are both being published in print on Sunday.
The Milford Times, Northville Record Daily, Novi News, South Lyon Herald all are published once a week on Thursday.
Hometownlife.com has the online versions of the Observer/Eccentric Newspapers. Each paper has an option for “E-newsletters”, which delivers headlines on the same day as the print publications and is sent free directly to the requestor’s email.

Ann Arbor News

On July 23rd, the historic print edition (in business 174 years) of the Ann Arbor News will cease and be replaced by a new web-based media company called AnnArbor.com. The new online version will be continuously updated and publish a print version on Thursdays and Sundays.
MLive.com - MLive is a collection of online news sites for these cities: Ann Arbor, Bay City, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, and Saginaw. MLive is seeking contributions of blog posts, tips, photos, or videos to publish on its site.
