Library Internship

The Library Internship is the final course in the Library Technician Program and offers students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skill in a real life work environment. Students generally take this course after having completed all 6 core courses. Students must be ready to take on a challenging pre-professional learning experience that has career expanding potential. Students with equivalent library experience may register with permission of the Program Coordinator.
The Library Internship is a 4-credit, 15-week course that gives the student hands-on experience working in a library of their choice. Students will work under the supervision of a librarian for 120 hours doing such things as:
- Circulation
- Book processing
- Cataloging
- Interlibrary loan
- Records management
- Complete 15 Library Technician credit hours or permission of the Program Coordinator
- Choose a library well in advance of registering for the internship course
- Interview with the library director
- Formalize arrangement by completing the Library Technician Internship Agreement Contract
- Register for the internship course (LIB 2500)

- Attend the first class meeting of LIB 2500
- Select a well-funded library with cutting edge technology
- Outline their goals for their internship
- Keep a daily journal of tasks and events of their internship experiences
- Create an Excel timesheet and track their internship hours
- Write a report describing and analyzing their internship library
- Participate in on-line (Blackboard) discussions throughout the course
- Update their resume to reflect their internship experiences
- Fulfill required work under the supervision of a librarian
- Maintain a professional attitude, be creative, and keep an open mind
