Purposes of the Programs
Associate Degree Nursing Program
The overall purposes of the Associate Degree Nursing Program are:
- To prepare graduates to function competently at the beginning staff level in the roles of provider of care, manager of care, and member within the discipline of nursing.
- To prepare graduates to take the NCLEX-RN examination.
- To prepare graduates with a foundation for upward mobility into higher levels of nursing education.
Practical Nurse Education MCL/PNE
The overall purposes of the Modified Career Ladder/Practical Nurse Education Program are:
- To prepare graduates to give supervised direct nursing care in a variety of health care settings.
- To prepare graduates to take the NCLEX-LPN examination.
- To prepare graduates to enter the Second Year Associate Degree Completion Program (RNE).
Registered Nurse Education RNE
The over all purposes of the Registered Nurse Education program are:
- To provide students who have successfully completed the MCL-PNE Program the opportunity to complete their nursing education as an Associate Degree Nurse (ADN).
- Prepare graduates to give care at a beginning staff level in the roles of provider of care, manager of care, and member within the discipline of nursing.
- To prepare graduates to take the NCLEX-RN examination.
- To prepare graduates with a foundation for upward mobility into higher levels of nursing education.
Transitional Practical Nurse TPN (LPN to ADN Track)
The overall purposes of the TPN program are:
- Offer Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) an opportunity to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree.
- Prepare graduates to give care at a beginning staff level in the roles of provider of care, manager of care, and member within the discipline of nursing.
- To prepare graduates to take the NCLEX-RN examination.
- To prepare graduates with a foundation for upward mobility into higher levels of nursing education.
Accreditation and Approval
The Associate Degree Nursing Program has been in operation since 1965 and received approval by the Michigan Board of Nursing (Phone: 517.335.0918 or www.michigan.gov/mdch). The program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (NLNAC) and is an agency member of the NLN. Opportunities for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Oakland Community College has developed nursing program articulation agreements with Eastern Michigan University, Madonna University, Oakland University and Saginaw Valley State University, designed to facilitate educational mobility for OCC ADN graduates and to give them opportunities to complete a BSN degree in an educationally sound, expeditious, and cost-effective manner. More information about these programs is shared with the students in the information sessions and can be obtained from the Dean’s Office.
Opportunities for a Master of Science in Adult Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (RN/MSN)
The College has also developed an affiliation agreement with Oakland University for an RN/MSN program. Graduates of the OCC ADN program, who have passed their licensure exam, have an opportunity to complete a Master of Science in the Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist (RN/MSN) program at Oakland Community College, Highland Lakes Campus.
The Department of Nursing, as an integral part of Oakland Community College, strives to fulfill the basic mission and educational goals of the college by offering quality educational opportunities that meet the current and emerging needs of the individuals and the community Oakland Community College serves.
The philosophy of the Associate Degree Nursing Curriculum reflects the values of the parent institution. The curriculum is founded on the basic philosophical beliefs of the nursing faculty about the human being, environment, health, nursing, nursing education and teaching/learning.
- The Human Being is a unique, holistic, complex, interdependent and multi-dimensional individual, possessing dignity and innate worth.
- Environment comprises all conditions, circumstances and influences surrounding and affecting the development and behavior of individuals, families or groups
- Health is a dynamic multi-dimensional state that involves the physical, cognitive, emotional social/cultural and spiritual well being of the individual.
- Health promotion is the process of fostering awareness, influencing attitudes, and identifying alternatives so that individuals can make informed choices and change their behavior to achieve an optimal level of physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual health.
- Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations. - Caring is a theory-based philosophy characterized by the principles of caring and by behaviors that influence the outcome of actual or potential health problems or needs.
- Critical thinking is a purposeful, goal-directed behavior. It is thinking based on principles of sciences and the scientific method.
- Nursing education is a combination of general education courses in the humanities and biological, social, and behavioral sciences, and courses in the theory and practice of nursing.
