Prospective Students

Programs Offered

The Nursing Department offers four different programs:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
    Graduates are eligible to take the State Board of Nursing Examination (NCLEX) to become a Registered Nurse.
  • Modified Career Ladder/Practical Nurse Education (MCL/PNE)
    Graduates are eligible to take the State Board of Nursing Examination (NCLEX) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Registered Nurse Education (RNE)
    This program is specifically for students who have completed the MCL/PNE Program. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the State Board of Nursing Examination to become a Registered Nurse.
  • Transitional Practical Nurse (TPN)
    This program is specifically for students who are Licensed Practical Nurses. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the State Board of Nursing Examination (NCLEX) to become a Registered Nurse.

How to get Started

It’s best to start by talking to a counselor at either the Highland Lakes or Southfield Campus, who can guide you and evaluate your particular situation. The counselor will explain program requirements and how admission to the nursing program works.

Counselors

Nursing classes are held on two campuses. The Highland Lakes Campus is the site of the Associate Degree Nursing Program (ADN). The Southfield Campus is the site for the Modified Career Ladder Practical Nurse Education Program (MCL-PNE), the Second Year Associate Degree Completion Program (RNE), and the Transitional Practical Nurse Program (TPN). Residency

Nursing Program Costs

The cost of tuition is based on the number of credit hours and the residency status of the student. Additionally, there are costs for lab and technical fees, registration and textbooks. The student is also responsible for the cost of uniforms, lab coats, shoes, stethoscope, watch with a second hand, malpractice insurance, a physical exam, drug screen and finger printing.

Second year students can expect approximately $500 in additional expenses for the School Pin and NCLEX application.

Information Sessions

Information Sessions” are held periodically throughout the year on the Highland Lakes Campus (for the ADN Program) and the Southfield Campus (for the LPN, RNE, and TPN Programs). Attendance at an information session is required before entering the nursing programs at OCC. The sessions provide an overview of the nursing programs and give prospective students an opportunity to have questions answered.

Math Proficiency Tests

Math Proficiency Testing is required prior to entering the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) or Modified Career Ladder Practical Nurse Education (MCL-PNE) Programs. The testing is done in the ASC (Academic Support Center) at both the Highland Lakes Campus and the Southfield Campus.

Free math tutors are available to help you prepare for the test. You may take the test a maximum of three (3) times. Please Note:

  • No one is admitted once the test has begun.
  • Do not wait until the last minute.
  • Tests are not administered during semester break.
  • No testing is done during finals week or between semesters.

Highland Lakes Campus ASC

The test is given in Woodland Hall Room 20 and test results are immediate. Sample tests may be obtained from the Highland Lakes Campus ASC, Counseling Office, or from the Highland Lakes ASC website, or can be mailed upon request. There are only fifteen (15) seats available for each testing. The last week for testing at the Highland Lakes Campus is April 16 – 20, 2007.

Southfield Campus ASC

. The test is given each Tuesday at 2 p.m. or Thursday at 6 p.m. Sample tests may be obtained from the Southfield Campus ASC, or from the Southfield ASC website.
