Crime Prevention
Personal Protection – Oakland Community College places the highest priority on the safety and security of its employees, students, and others on College property.
- Report any threats or acts of violence. Abusive language, hostile behavior, carrying weapons or other acts of violence will not be tolerated. Report such incidents to the Department of Public Safety.
- Personal Protection Order (PPO). If you have a PPO, contact the Department of Public Safety as soon as possible to validate enforcement.
- Parking. Remember where you parked. Walk confidently to and from your vehicle. Have your keys readily available. Whenever possible, use the "buddy system" of walking to your vehicle with someone. Public Safety can be contacted for an escort.
- Suspicious activity. Report any suspicious or criminal activity immediately.
- Minimize your vulnerability while walking on campus:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Using your cell phone, PDA, IPod, etc., leave the impression that you’re not paying attention and can make you more vulnerable.
- Know where you’re going and how to get there.
How to protect your property
- Never abandon your belongings. It is common for students to walk away from their book-bag or backpack to find a library book or get a snack from the vending machine and return to find their bag gone. Take the bag with you or have a trusted friend watch over it.
- Don’t bring excessively valuable belongings to campus. If you value something, chances are someone else will too. Avoid the showing of valuables.
- Secure your vehicle. Keep your car locked with the windows rolled up. Remember where you parked and walk confidently to your vehicle.
- Keep valuables out of sight. Do not leave cell phones, computers or other items visible in your vehicle. Lock valuables in your trunk.
- Record serial numbers. Make it a habit to record serial numbers of your belongings. Engrave
items. - Report suspicious/criminal activity. Call Public Safety immediately:
- From an off campus location or cell phone, dial 248-858-4951. This number is answered by the Oakland County Sheriff and is dispatched to the Department of Public Safety.
