What is Service Learning?
Service Learning is a way Students and Faculty can become engaged in the needs of the surrounding community. It can be done through Volunteerism or through Academic Service Projects. When connected to a course, students turn classroom learning into real-world experiences that they can take into the workforce as they become community leaders and responsible citizens.
Anyone can become a volunteer! Any course can integrate service learning!

Put Into Perspective…

When a group of students cleans up trash along a local river, that is SERVICE.
When students study river water under a microscope in a lab, that is LEARNING.
When students remove trash and collect water samples, analyze what they found, share the results and offer suggestions for the neighborhood to reduce pollution, and then reflect on their experience, that is SERVICE LEARNING!

Service Learning is NOT:

  • An episodic volunteer program
  • An add-on to an existing school or college curriculum
  • Completing minimum service hours in order to graduate
  • Service assigned as a form of punishment
  • Only for young people, or people without families and jobs
  • One-sided: benefiting only students or only the community
