Chemical of the Month: Uranium Hexafluoride

Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) in a sealed tube. This compound (in its gaseous form) is used in a critical step for enriching the concentration of the isotope U-235  for use as a nuclear fuel. Isotopic enrichment is a daunting technological and scientific endeavor, requiring large energy intensive manufacturing facilities that are difficult to construct and maintain. This makes them likely targets in Iran if military action is used to prevent that country from acquiring nuclear weapons.
