Oakland Community College has implemented the use of placement testing for English, Math, and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.  Placement in the appropriate level of course will enhance student success and save students' time and resources.  A short description of the various placement tests offered at OCC follows:

COMPASS

(Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System)

  • This computerized assessment will provide your English and math placement.
    • You will determine your level of  proficiency from the computer choices and then select where you will begin.
    • COMPASS will adjust the questions you are given based on your successful answers.
      • For example, if your response is correct you will be given a more difficult question.
      • If your response is incorrect, you will be given an easier problem until your correct level is determined.

  • COMPASS sessions are offered at various times to see the schedule; click on the link below::

  • The combined English and math test requires up to 3 hours to complete.

    • The test is given on a "walk-in" basis - no appointment is needed.
    • An admissions application MUST be submitted and processed prior to testing.
    • Driver's license or picture I.D. must be presented at testing.
  • Sample COMPASS questions are available on the Internet:

MTELP

(Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency)

  • MTELP assesses grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills of non-native speakers of English, and foreign-born students who speak a non-American dialect of English.

  • MTELP is a test of standard English, and does not contain American idioms and culturally-specific references.

  • MTELP is available in the Academic Support Center on an Appointment basis. The test takes up to 90 minutes to complete.

  • Call 248-233-2735 or 248-233-2736 for additional information or an appointment.
