Operating Room Observation Objectives

The OR shift in the EMS 1400 course is intended to function as an introduction to the OR.  The clinical student will become familiarized with the workings of the Operating Room of the hospital so that he or she will be properly prepared for the next clinical course, when intubations will be performed on OR patients

Students performing observational clinical rotations in the OR will:

1. Learn how to properly enter an operating room area, by changing out of all street clothes and properly donning OR scrubs

2. Demonstrate proper procedure for “scrubbing in” prior to entering the OR

3. Observe all procedures in the OR including anesthesia administration, pre-surgery prep, intubation, ventilation, surgery, and keeping the integrity of a sterile field

4. Recognize and identify internal structures of the human body

5. Assist OR staff in any task which is in the student’s scope of practice
