Operating Room Observation Objectives
The OR shift in the EMS 1400
course is intended to function as an introduction to the OR. The clinical
student will become familiarized with the workings of the Operating Room of the
hospital so that he or she will be properly prepared for the next clinical
course, when intubations will be performed on OR patients
Students
performing observational clinical rotations in the OR will:

Learn how to properly enter an operating
room area, by changing out of all street clothes and properly donning OR
scrubs |

| 2. |
Demonstrate proper procedure for
“scrubbing in” prior to entering the OR |
| |
|
| 3. |
Observe all procedures in the OR
including anesthesia administration, pre-surgery prep, intubation,
ventilation, surgery, and keeping the integrity of a sterile field |

| 4. |
Recognize and identify internal
structures of the human body |
| |
|
| 5. |
Assist OR staff in any task which is in
the student’s scope of practice |
