Prerequisite

Mat 1630 (or equivalent college transfer course) with a “C” or better within the last three years, or Mat 1540 and Mat 1560 (or equivalent college transfer courses) with a “C” or better within the last three years, or COMPASS math placement results appropriate for this course within the last two years.

Course Description

The course topics include limits, continuity, the concept of the derivative, differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions, applications of the derivative, antidifferentiation, the indefinite integral, the definite integral, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, numerical integration and some application of the integral. Some of the course concepts will be explored and/or enhances with current technology. This class will be taught with a computer component. Many of the classes will be taught in the computer lab, with software applications. You may be required to complete assignments using software available in the open lab (F-116) or you may be expected to access materials on the Augmented Course Site.

Evaluation

There will be four tests and a comprehensive final exam. Each test will be worth 125 points. The exam will be worth 200 points. Selected homework may be handed in and graded.  Additional worksheets and lab sheets will be assigned. Anything collected will be given a point value and will be counted as part of your final grade. You will be expected to participate in group activities both in class and out of class.

Make-Up's

Test dates are listed on the course schedule.   If you know you will miss a test, you must phone or tell me in advance to make arrangements. I will accommodate you one time only. After the test date, a missed test cannot be made-up. The grade for only one missed test may be made-up by using your final exam score again, if I agree. Other missed tests will be given grade of zero.

Attendance

Attendance is important for your success in this class so attendance will be taken and will count 50 points. You will receive 2 points each day you attend to a maximum of 50 for the semester. To receive all points, you must be punctual and stay for the entire class. If you will miss a test day, you must phone me in advance of the test time to make arrangements.

Available Assistance

Questions related to homework will be answered at the beginning of each session. Additional help is available during my office hours or in the IIC Math Lab (Room C-231). In addition, videotapes keyed to the text are available for checkout in the library. Graphing Calculator Seminars will be offered in the IIC Math Lab. Word Problem Seminars will be offered as well as Math and Science Study Skill Seminars. Go to the IIC Math Lab to get times, further details and to sign up.

Withdrawing

It is your responsibility to complete the drop/withdraw process if you decide to withdraw from the course by going to the Registration office on campus and filling out the appropriate form before Nov.21. The instructor cannot give a course grade of W, nor can she change the W grade once you have requested it. She can, however, assign a WF or a WP. If you feel one of these grades would be more appropriate in your circumstances be sure to see the instructor before filling out the withdrawal form. If you stop attending class and do not withdraw officially, your grade will be F.

ADA Notification

Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should report to the PASS office, which will inform the instructor of any special conditions pertaining to their learning.

Incompletes

An incomplete (I) grade may only be assigned if the following conditions are met:
The situation, which prevents the student from completing the course during the regular term, must be outside the student’s control.
At least 75% of the course must already have been successfully completed (pass) by the student to be considered for an “I” grade.
The instructor must be informed of the circumstances and must agree to award an “I” grade prior to the end of the term.
The student and the instructor must complete the College Agreement Form for an “I” grade prior to the end of the term.

Notes

A TI 86 graphing calculator is required (no TI-89 or TI-92 allowed) for this class. You must bring it with you to each class. Internet access is also required for the Augmented Course Site.
