STATE AND COUNTRY DOMAIN NAMES

Notes |
| .mt.us: state government |
http://www.state.mt.us/ |
State of Montana |
State codes are followed by the code for the United States, .us,
one of the few instances where a code for the US is used. But
note that some states are switching to the .gov domain name, as in the
State of Michigan's site, http://michigan.gov/. |
|
.fi:
non-U.S. site |
http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/ |
Department of Linguistics, University of Helsinki |
A two-letter domain code identifies each country in the world, but,
as noted above, it is generally not required for the U.S. (Fi
equals Finland. See the
Norwegian Internet
Domain Name Registry for a
listing of country domain names.) |
| .ac.uk:
non-U.S. site with type of site indicated |
http://www.lib.ed.ac.uk/ |
Library Online, University of Edinburgh |
English-speaking countries generally have a two-letter
(sometimes a three-letter) code preceding the country code. It
identifies the type of source. For example, the UK's .ac
(for "academic")
equals the US's .edu. Some are simply adopting the simple
three-letter codes used by the U.S.--e.g., .com. |

were approved in 2000 but are less frequently seen.
biz
for businesses, for example, is little used; most business
are satisfied to remain with .com. Similarly,
.museum
is little used by museums, most of which are non-profits and
are sticking with .org., or in some cases, .com
or .edu (if affiliated with a college or university). (See
searchWebServices.com for more information.) |
