To access a select number of individual journals, choose EJS

What's the difference between the periodicals databases and the individual journals?

Each database is a collection of hundreds or even thousands of periodicals in one web site.  A typical search covers all or a large set of these periodicals.  In most cases the original publishers of the periodicals impose an embargo (delay) of several weeks or months before providing their publications to the database company.

EJS, on the other hand, provides links to a small set of  individual scholarly and professional journals, and these journals are the latest issues from the original publishers' web sites.

ACCESS FOR YOUR ONLINE STUDENTS

Attention instructors using Blackboard and Educator: Your students will automatically have access to online library resources through Blackboard and Educator.  Students using Blackboard can click on the OCC Library tab.  Students using Educator can access library resources through the Resource Center>OCC Library links.

What other kinds of links will your students find on the page of Online Library Resources?

  • The online library catalog
  • OCC subject guides covering both online and print sources
  • The best search engines and Internet directories
  • Special services for online students: Request a Library Card
  • Reference help via online chat and email: Ask a Librarian
  • SearchPath, an interactive online tutorial to teach information literacy skills

The OCC Libraries are pleased to present ...

An interactive online tutorial, SearchPath helps students learn information literacy skills.  SearchPath is linked on the OCC Libraries home page www.oaklandcc.edu/library -- scroll down!  SearchPath links are also located on the on-campus and off-campus Articles & Databases pages.

There are six modules which can be done individually or as a group:

  • Choosing Sources
  • Creating a Search Strategy
  • Using the Library Catalog
  • Finding Articles in Research Databases
  • Using the Web
  • Citing Sources

The modules are done at the student's own pace.  Each one has a quiz and will record a score that can be printed and given to an instructor.  The link can be inserted into BlackBoard or Educator courses.  Your comments are welcome!

MultiSearch

Try it!  Look for books and articles in one search!

MultiSearch is a federated search engine that you and your students can use to search across multiple databases and the library catalog.  Enter a search term and select a subject category or a set of individual databases.  Multisearch retrieves information across your selections.

GROUP ORIENTATION / INSTRUCTION

OCC librarians provide library orientations to teach students how to access online and traditional print materials.  A basic library tour includes introductions to the library catalog, magazine and journal databases, and the Internet.  It can also be tailored to suit the needs of an individual instructor and class. Instructors, we encourage you to:

More information about the benefits of library tours is available.

RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS / RESERVES

We further encourage instructors to consult with their campus librarians in the design of research assignments.

The librarians can determine whether the library has the resources necessary to meet the specific requirements of an assignment, and perhaps suggest print and electronic sources to enhance the students' learning experience. The librarians can also determine whether materials are limited to the extent that certain items should be placed on reserve. If you have an item or know of something in the library collection that you would like to place on reserve, please complete a reserves request form and submit it to your campus library. To contact a librarian on your campus, select one of the campus links at the top of this page.

WHAT TO DO IF WE DON'T HAVE WHAT YOU NEED

Do the libraries, or does the library Web site, lack something you and your students need? Just ask for it. We want to have the right books, journals, videos, CDs and more in the libraries, and we want the Web site to provide you with the online resources you need to support successful teaching and learning.  Don't forget to check our new-books list regularly.

PLAGIARISM PROTECTION

Links to sites that will assist you in explaining plagiarism to students and offer guidance on how to detect plagiarized material.  Just use your OCC employee login and password to access it.
