The
Womencenter and the Construction Management Program of Oakland Community
College, and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) –
Detroit Chapter are hosting an exciting, week-long day camp to introduce young
women to the world of construction. Participants will attend camp from July 11
– 15 at OCC’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills.
Taught
by local women employed in the construction industry, MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl
in Construction) Camp provides information and hands-on experience in a wide
range of construction-related fields. Students will gain knowledge and
practice in areas such as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, tiling, surveying,
and painting, and will build a small frame house on the campus.
In addition, campers will practice with a crane and forklift, and create
construction-related functional projects to take home. Hardhats, safety
goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment are provided. At the
conclusion of the camp, each camper will receive a Tomboy Tools® toolkit.
A
recognition completion reception will be held on Friday, July 15 for the
campers, their families, MACIC Camp staff, OCC and NAWIC representatives, and
construction industry and union sponsors.
The
MAGIC Camp experience is free to registered students, thanks to the generous
donations of the local construction industry, including The Home Depot, Barton
Malow, Harley Ellis Devereaux, AUCH General Contractors, George McIntosh Inc., Michigan
CAT, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, International Brotherhood of
