New OCC Writers’ Series Begins June 24

Oakland Community College’s Auburn Hill Campus will host readings by regional writers on the last Tuesday of each month, beginning in June.  Called LitOutLoud, each event begins at 5:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the campus’ F Building.  Admission is free and the public is invited.

Open mic sessions will also be featured at 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with sign-ups beginning at 3:30 p.m.

LitOutLoud launches on Tuesday, June 24 with local poet Zilka Joseph, who will read poems from her recent book, Lands I Live In, as well as other pieces.

In her work Joseph recounts the vivid passions of her childhood in India, and the complex hopes and fears involved in her move to the American Midwest.  She also highlights such experiences as arriving in the United States, and a first snowfall.

Zilka Joseph grew up in Calcutta.  After earning several degrees and working in a variety of academic fields, she moved to Chicago with her husband in 1997.  The couple currently lives in Auburn Hills.

Ms. Joseph’s work has been published in both India and the U.S., and has won several awards.  Currently she tutors at Oakland Community College, teaches a poetry workshop for Springfield Arts-Metro Detroit and is completing a full-length collection of poems.
