Construction Camp for High School Girls Offered At Oakland Community College This Summer

The Womencenter and the Construction Management Program at Oakland Community College present a week-long camp to introduce young women in high school to the world of construction.  The day camp is for participants ages 15-18, carrying a minimum grade point average of 2.75.  It will run July 14-18 at OCC’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills.

Called “MAGIC” (Mentoring a Girl in Construction), the camp will provide information and hands-on experience in a wide range of construction-related fields taught by local women employed in the construction industry.  A panel of women employed in various construction-related careers will be also featured.

Participants will gain knowledge and practice in areas such as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, drywall, and masonry.  They will also build a small-frame house on the campus.  In addition, campers will practice with a crane simulator and create construction-related projects to take home.

At the conclusion of the camp, each camper will receive a Tomboy Tools® toolkit, donated by Clark Construction Company.  Campers will be recognized at a completion dinner after the last day of camp.

Lunch will be provided every day, safety training sessions are scheduled each morning, and hard hats, safety goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment will be supplied.

The MAGIC Camp experience is free to students who register and are accepted, thanks to the generous donations of the local construction industry and Oakland Community College.

For further information and to receive an application brochure for MAGIC Camp, call the Womencenter at (248) 522-3642.  The application deadline is June 6.

The Orchard Ridge Campus is located at 27055 Orchard Lake Road, just south of I-696 in Farmington Hills.
