Fencing – Beginning
This course introduces students to the art of foil fencing.  Topics include:  history, terms, vocabulary, proper warm-up, and basic foil techniques including advance, retreat, attack, parry, reposte, and judging.  Mask and foil will be provided.  This class is taught in a fun and relaxing manner and is open to ages 13 and up.

Fencing – Intermediate
This course builds upon the sk
ills learned in Beginning Fencing.  Topics include proper warm-up, intermediate foil techniques, and introduction to epee and sabre fencing.  Mask and weapon will be provided. This class is taught in a fun and relaxing manner and is open to ages 13 and up. 
Prerequisite:  Beginning Fencing or consent of instructor.

Fencing – Advanced
This class will build upon the skills covered in Intermediate Fencing.  Topics include proper warm-up and advanced techniques.  Formal instruction and electric equipment (excluding electric weapons) will be available.  Students must provide their own equipment.  This class is taught in a fun and relaxing manner and is open to ages 13 and up.
Prerequisite:  Intermediate Fencing or consent of instructor.

Open Fencing
This gives fencers an oportunity to keep in shape between scheduled classes.
Dates for open fencing vary as this course is offered between semesters throughout the year for 5 weeks.

General Class Information • Credit vs. Non-Credit
Credit Fencing courses are offered through OCC's department of physical education. Classes are open to any registered OCC student. Class meeting times are published in the College Schedule of Classes.

Non-Credit Fencing classes are available through the Continuing Education Department and are open to community members / students as young as age 13. Please call the Continuing Education Department at (248) 522-3509 to request a "Fitness and Recreation Brochure" which contains registration information and a schedule of class meeting times and dates.


Beginning Fencing
(PER 1941 • 1 credit) & (non-credit)
Prerequisite: None
This course introduces students to the art of foil fencing. Topics include history, vocabulary, proper warm-up, and basic foil techniques including advance, retreat, attack, parry, reposte, and judging.

Intermediate Fencing (PER 1942 • 1 credit) & (non-credit)
Prerequisite: Beginning Fencing or consent of instructor
This course will build upon the skills covered in PER 1941 (Fencing Beginning) and provides students with an opportunity to expand their foil techniques as well as introducing students to the epee and saber. Electric fencing equipment will be available.

Advanced Fencing (non-credit only)
Prerequisite: Intermediate Fencing or consent of instructor
This class will build upon the skills covered in Intermediate Fencing.  Topics include proper warm-up and advanced techniques.  Formal instruction and electric equipment (excluding electric weapons) will be available.  Students must provide their own equipment.  This class is taught in a fun and relaxing manner and is open to ages 13 and up.

Open Fencing (non-credit only)
Prerequisite: Beginning Fencing or consent of instructor
This course encourages continued fencing between the semester courses listed above. Topics include proper warm-up and advanced techniques. Formal instruction and electric equipment (excluding electric weapons) will be available. Students must provide their own equipment and be supervised by an instructor. This class is taught in a fun and relaxing manner and is open to ages 13 and up.
Prerequisite: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced fencing, or consent of instructor.

Note: Students may take these courses repeatedly for personal enrichment.



Equipment Needed

Students must provide their own fencing jacket and glove, available in the bookstore. Fencing mask and foil weapon will be provided during class periods. You will not be allowed to fence if you do not have all of the proper equipment with you in class.

Week 1: Introduction, History, Vocabulary / Equipment: Glove, Shoes / Jacket Fitting, Mask, Glove, Breast Plates / Stretching / Pick-up or order Jackets and gloves at Bookstore

Week 2: The Weapons: Foil, Épee, and Sabre / Parts: blade, foible, mid-section, forte, bell guard, pommel, tip / Grip, En Garde, Salute, Advance, Retreat, Extension, Lunge / Glove Game

Week 3: Double Advance & Retreat, Attack and Parry, Fourth Position and Reposte

Week 4: Attack and Parry, Sixth Position and Reposte

Week 5: Beat Attack, Stop Thrust

Week 6: Disengage, Second Intention, One-Two Attack

Week 7: Judging Rules and Skills / Director & Judges / Round Robin Tournament

Week 8: Class Tournament – Quarter Finals

Week 9: Class Tournament – Semi Finals

Week 10: Class Tournament - Finals / Class final exam / Open fencing for remainder of class

8 week courses (when offered) are adjusted to cover the same material

Week 4: Circle Parries (Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth) Vertical & Diagonal Disengage

Week 5: The Bind (Attack in Opposition), Glide
