Service Learning FAQ

What is Service Learning?
Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience. The three main components are service, learning, and reflection.

How is this Accomplished?
By incorporating community service into your class as an extra credit option or actual assignment.

Where Can I Find Community Partners and Ideas for a Project?
Soon, OCC faculty will be able to access the Service Learning website which will have a searchable database of volunteer opportunities, online forms, links, and more! While the site is being developed, you can find hundreds of resources just by contacting the Service Learning Program. We have access to a variety of tools which range from actual Service Learning course syllabi, to detailed information on non-profit organizations that have developed partnerships with OCC. We also have access to training, workshops, and conferences for both students and faculty to attend!

Can Students also Access the College’s Service Learning website?
Yes, when the website is finished, faculty will be able to instruct students to visit the website to find community partners and the Student Registration forms which must be completed prior to students’ participation in a project.

What are some of the Outcomes Associated with Service Learning Projects?
  • Involvement in service projects promotes active learning. Most students who participate report that they leave the experience with a positive new view of subject material and of the service.
  • Faculty benefit from creating connections not only within the community, but also with other Service Learning faculty from around the nation.
  • Service Learning projects raise the possibility for grant opportunities, as well as possible local, state-wide, and national recognition of best practices, and outstanding service projects!
  • Service Learning can be a pathway for faculty to become more aware of the skill sets required by today’s global workforce.
Have any other OCC Faculty done Service Learning Projects in Their Courses?
Yes, approximately 119 students have participated in a number of noteworthy Projects that were designed and implemented by OCC faculty. Read about them on our website!

How can I find time to do the "extra" work in implementing service-learning?
In the beginning, Service Learning will require a little extra time for planning and preparation. However, it is not intended to be an “extra” project. If you take advantage of already existing syllabus resources, and utilize your students and the Service Learning Program as resources, you will find the benefits outweigh the initial effort.
