Kathleen McShane, our 2009 juror, had this to say about the show:

The title I’ve chosen for this year’s From Our Perspective National Women’s Art Exhibition is borrowed from a line about time in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets. “Stretching Before and After,” in the case of this exhibition, refers to a sense of art historical or historical continuity across time in the works I’ve selected

I initially chose work based on a variety of factors including technical, visual, narrative and conceptual strength.  The work was then winnowed further for its context within a thematic thread, which I discovered after looking through the applications many times over. The works all share some interesting parallels from history or art history—whether through image, strategy, language, or culture. They can be located against general and specific references. These include Dadaism, modernism, pop culture/comics, cinematic devices, sequencing, politics, documentary and contemporary feminist issues  (such as artist Janine Antoni’s chocolate head sculptures, Eva Hesse’s materiality and body references, Duchamp’s ready-mades, Joseph Cornell’s boxes, Neil Jenney’s early text works, Howard Kottler ceramic decals and Faith Ringold’s quilts). The selected work comes from a wide range of materials and processes--from traditional craft to digital forms, including photography, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, jewelry, prints, drawings, paintings, and digital prints. One of the ongoing aims of this annual exhibition is to include work that brings “an unconventional perspective”.   The works I selected reflect diverse perspectives, while also being a part of a continuum, stretching before and after time.
