At a speech at a neighboring community college last summer,
President Obama proposed spending $12 billion on community colleges
in the next
decade, citing them as essential to the nation’s well-being.
"Well-trained and highly-skilled workers will
be best positioned to secure high-wage jobs, thereby fueling American prosperity," said a report
by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers published July 13, 2009.
"Occupations requiring higher educational attainment
are projected to grow much faster than those with lower education requirements, with the
fastest growth among occupations that require an associate's degree or a
post-secondary vocational award," the report said.
