Do I have to fill out the FAFSA to receive a scholarship?

Not necessarily; there are some scholarships that are not based on financial need.  However, you will have more financial options if you do apply.

If I am on Academic Probation, can I receive a scholarship?

Yes, if the scholarship doesn’t require students to make academic progress.  Most scholarship donors want students who are making decent grades and earning credits toward a degree.

How do I apply?

Scholarships are posted outside the Campus Office of Financial Assistance and on the OCC website.  Complete the OCC Scholarship application (available on the OCC website and on campus) and submit it to your campus financial aid office.

How are the scholarships determined?

Scholarships are awarded based on the criteria listed on the scholarship posting.  Students are ranked according to their calculated quality points.  This calculation counts the number of credit hours (up to 30) multiplied by the GPA for a maximum of 120 quality points.  Example 30 credit hours X 4.00 GPA = 120 quality points.  The absolute maximum number of quality points is 120.  If two or more students have the same amount of quality points, we look at the GPA.  If two or more students are still tied, the number of withdraws taken by the students will be the deciding factor.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

Yes, you may apply for all scholarships for which you meet the eligibility requirements.  Scholarships are awarded for one semester.  However, you may receive only ONE Foundation scholarship and one Campus scholarship per semester.

Will a scholarship affect my financial aid award?

If you are receiving federal and state financial assistance, your total aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance at OCC.

When will I be notified after I apply?  How will I be notified?

All scholarships have a deadline date.  Allow three to four  weeks after that date for notification to occur.  OCC Foundation scholarship recipients are notified in writing.

If I have been a scholarship recipient, can I reapply?

Yes, you may apply for the scholarship posting which will be for the next semester or the next year.
Remember, you can only have one scholarship per semester.

When will I receive the money from the scholarship?

OCC scholarship recipients will have the scholarship applied to tuition and fees first, unless is a tuition-only scholarship.  Remaining funds will be disbursed in a student refund check payable approximately two weeks after the 100% refund period.  Thereafter, checks will be run every two weeks for the balance of the semester.

Can I use the scholarship to purchase books?

Yes, if your scholarship covers all expenses in addition to tuition and fees.  If the scholarship is limited to tuition and fees only, you will not be able to purchase books.

Will I be awarded the scholarship in time to pay for my classes?

Plan to pay, since the scholarships are posted subject to funding availability.

If I already paid for my classes, will I be reimbursed?

Yes, approximately two weeks after the 100% refund period, or according to the regular check run schedule.

What happens if I am not registered for 12 credits and the scholarship requires full-time enrollment?

You will not be eligible for the scholarship unless you are in a program that has a different credit hour requirement for full-time.

If I drop any credits during the semester, do I have to pay the scholarship back?

If you officially drop after the 100% refund period, you do not have to repay the scholarship.

If you don’t officially drop the class and earn an “N” grade, which means that you never attended the class, you will have to repay the scholarship.

PLEASE NOTE: Scholarship funds are provided by our donors to assist you in being successful in your academic endeavors.  Honoring the scholarship requirements is the highest form of gratitude.  Also, it is strongly suggested that you send a letter of thanks to the donor.
