First Aid

This 8 hour class teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking, or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, seizures, shock, and other first aid emergencies.  This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use.

CPR/AED

This American Heart Association training course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to issue certification in American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS CPR.  This course will guide the student through all of the current AHA HCP BLS CPR knowledge and skills.  A Healthcare Provider BLS CPR card will be issued after successfully completing the written and practical exam.

Active Assailant-Your Response

This workshop will include a lecture as well as discussing some 'real life' scenarios that will provide valuable information to promote personal safety.  Participants will discuss identifying characteristics of an armed shooter, discuss the Run, Hide, Fight concept.

Fire Safety-Putting that Fire Out

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire and it only takes minutes for an area to be engulfed in flames or filled by thick black smoke.  Participants will know how to safely operate a fire extinguisher and what types of extinguishers can be used on what types of fires.

Help! My Loved One Has Dementia!

This course will review the essentials regarding the disease of dementia, related symptoms and behaviors but will focus on our own interactions with our loved ones.  Caring for a loved one with dementia can make us feel overwhelmed and 'stuck' in unfulfilling relationship patterns.  Drawing from professional research and recommended practices in the dementia care field, we will discuss approaches to coping and managing behaviors.  We will also look at how our own expectations and actions play a role in these relationships. Attendees with leave with enhanced understanding, increased knowledge of local resources and inspiration!

Drones For the Hobbyist

Unmanned aircraft systems commonly known as drones are becoming a popular past time for many individuals. Unknown to those individuals, is it is very likely not included in the drone packaging are the guidelines and applicable laws that the operator is responsible for complying with. 

Oakland Community College is pleased to offer an FAA Official FAA Safety Team Wings workshop about Drones and Model Aircraft Operations that will provide emphasis in the following areas: FAA Authority and Regulations, registration requirements,   safety concerns and being compliant with the laws and guidelines, frequently asked questions to aid in ensuring a basic knowledge of regulations and other requirements, and hands on flying time to help you reinforce required knowledge areas, safety concerns, and best operating practices. Intended audience: Aviators, enthusiasts, drone only operators (of any age), or just if you are curious!!! Non pilots will receive a Course Completion Certificate and pilots will receive Wings Program Credit and a Course Completion Certificate.
