Oakland Community College

English Tests

When you apply, you will take the MTELP test (Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency). This test will determine which ESL class you need to take.

You do not need to take the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) to enroll in ESL at Oakland Community College. However, if you already have a TOEFL score of 550+ on the paper test and TWE 5.5; or 213 on the computer-based test and TWE 5.5; or 79-80 on the iBT with a minimum of 24 in writing, then you do not need to take ESL classes.
