Empowering Leadership: Budding leaders build knowledge, skills

OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Students aren't the only graduates we celebrate at Oakland Community College.

David Ceci, director of law enforcement training and interim dean of emergency services non-traditional, and Bridget Kavanaugh, director, marketing and community relations, graduated from the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) Leadership Academy on July 26.

“It was an excellent evening at the Michigan Community College Leadership Academy graduation celebrating these two outstanding individuals,” said (left to right) Ceci, Provenzano, KavanaughOCC Chancellor Peter Provenzano. “We are so proud of Bridget and Dave for completing the program and thankful for their leadership at OCC.”

The Leadership Academy is facilitated by MCCA and professional leadership development firm Lead Star. It is designed for faculty and mid- to senior-level community college administrators who look to be leaders in their current positions or are ready to move into a higher level of leadership. Participants are nominated by their college president or chancellor.

The nine-month, cohort-style learning journey included in-person workshops, action-based learning projects, experiential learning activities, coaching and mentoring, and a capstone graduation experience in conjunction with the annual MCCA Summer Conference. The 38 fellows represented 21 colleges across the state and included academic affairs, student services, administration, workforce development and faculty positions.

The Academy is a hands-on, Michigan-specific professional development opportunity to sharpen leadership competencies and develop a strong statewide network of emerging leaders within community colleges. Graduates are asked to serve as mentors for the next cohort of emerging leaders.
