WHO CAN APPLY?
To be eligible for a laptop, you must be an OCC student enrolled in 8 or more credits
by the end of the day on January 26, 2021. By that same date, you also must submit
an application for a laptop. You’ll be notified if you qualify through your OCC email
account after January 27. Dell will ship laptops directly to qualifying students beginning
the week of February 3, 2021.
WHAT COMES WITH THE LAPTOP?
If you receive a laptop, it’s yours to keep. Students also receive free access to
all the software needed for their Winter 2021 classes. Access to specific software
will be provided for the classes in which you are enrolled. You’ll access the software
virtually through your MYOCC account.
NEED INTERNET ACCESS?
OCC has designated the areas below on each of its five campuses where all students
who need Internet access can use the College’s Wi-Fi network between the hours of
10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Students will need to follow the College's health and safety guidelines, including taking a health screening, before coming to campus.
WHERE ARE THE FUNDS COMING FROM THIS?
OCC is funding the laptop giveaway with money from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and
Economic Security (CARES) Act, passed by Congress in March 2020. OCC is one of the
only community colleges in Michigan using CARES Act funds to provide direct technology
assistance to full-time students.
The $1 million laptop giveaway is designed to address the increased technology needs
of OCC students during this time of remote learning. This winter, OCC will offer most
of its classes either online, with access available 24/7, or remotely, with instruction
provided both online at specific times and 24/7 On Demand. It also will offer a limited
number of hybrid classes, which combine online and on-campus instruction, and in-person
classes.
