The Student Learning Academy’s overarching mission is aligned with that of the HLC Assessment Academy philosophy. Specifically, we seek to achieve broader "Institution-wide Commitment and Engagement with Student Learning."

Within the broad context of this mission our Student Learning Project consisted of two major Goals. These Goals concern critical aspects of the college’s culture and operating procedures. The Goals are highly inter-related and inter-dependent, while at the same time representing a unique aspect of the college environment. The two Goals include:

Goal: Create a college climate that places high value on the assessment of student learning.

1.1 Objective: Clarify the roles and responsibilities of faculty and staff in terms of student learning assessment.

1.1.1 Action Plan: Establish a process where faculty, staff and other stakeholder groups can clearly define their roles and responsibilities with regard to the assessment of student learning.

1.1.2 Action Plan: Establish a process that helps faculty, staff and other stakeholder groups to understand and fulfill their roles and responsibilities with respect to the assessment of student learning.

1.1.3 Action Plan: Establish and sustain a process that helps faculty, staff and other stakeholder groups to utilize assessment of student learning results to further enhance the teaching and learning process.

1.2  Objective: Ensure that the assessment of student learning is clearly embedded in institutional policies and procedures.

1.2.1 Action Plan: Ensure that the College Strategic Plan clearly addresses student learning outcome assessment activities.

1.2.2 Action Plan: Ensure that Campus Academic Master Plans clearly address student learning outcome assessment activities with reference to how student learning results are to be used in driving curriculum development and revision.

1.2.3 Action Plan: Ensure that appropriate assessment language is reflected in labor contracts.

1.2.4 Action Plan: Ensure that all Release Time/Supplemental contracts clearly outline student learning assessment expectations when applicable.

1.2.5 Action Plan: Ensure that resource allocation decisions at the college and campus level are driven by student learning assessment results.

1.2.6 Action Plan: Ensure that all curriculum oriented committees and departments establish clear procedures and expectations for the incorporation and utilization of student learning assessment results which are mutually supportive.

1.2.7 Action Plan: Initiate and sustain student learning assessment activities in co-curricular areas of the college.

1.2.8 Action Plan: Ensure that college-wide rubrics are included in the syllabi of all faculty who teach a course approved for a General Education Outcome and used within the course to assess student learning.

1.2.9 Action Plan: Ensure that all proposed action strategies reported in program assessment benchmark feedback documents are implemented.

1.2.10 Action Plan: Ensure that all programs have plans for the assessment of student learning.

1.2.11 Action Plan: Require that all curriculum oriented college senate committees prepare and submit an annual report to the College Senate summarizing how their work has impacted student learning over the past year.

1.3 Objective: Maintain a broad array of professional development opportunities on all aspects of student learning assessment.

1.3.1Action Plan: Design and continually offer a series of introductory as well as advanced professional development workshops (driven by assessment results) covering the assessment of student learning within programs, general education and co-curricular areas.

1.3.2 Action Plan: Establish and sustain college-wide multi-disciplinary professional learning communities on each General Education Outcome.

1.3.3 Action Plan: Dedicate time at each Staff Development Day to student learning issues.

1.3.4 Action Plan: Support Adjunct Orientation opportunities on each campus where the assessment of student learning is an integral part of the material covered.

1.3.5 Action Plan: Support teams to attend HLC Assessment Workshops and conferences specific to student learning assessment.

1.3.6 Action Plan: Establish annual symposium with area colleges focused on student learning issues.

Create an integrated system which supports the routine collecting, sharing and applying of student learning data across the college.

2.1   Objective: Ensure that discussions of student learning are maintained across the college.

2.1.1 Action Plan: Develop and implement a set of communications strategies that promote continual sharing and discussion of student learning assessment information with faculty, administration and the Board of Trustees.

2.1.2 Action Plan: Produce an annual report on the status of student learning at OCC which is subsequently used to drive discussions with regard to teaching and learning.

2.1.3 Action Plan: Ensure that program, general education and co-curricular learning outcomes results are broadly published and discussed within appropriate groups.

2.2  Objective: Continually strive towards increasing the meaningfulness, utility and relevance of student learning information.

2.2.1 Action Plan: Enhance program assessment plans by aligning their learning Outcomes, Benchmarks and Assessment Methods with the Program Assessment Plan Rubric established by SOAC.

2.2.2Action Plan: Ensure that student artifacts evaluated during Faculty Assessment Day reflect work produced in courses approved for each General Education Outcome.

2.2.3 Action Plan: Develop and continually refine rubrics for each General Education Outcome.

2.2.4 Action Plan: Enhance the applicability of SAGE findings by using assessment instruments which reflect how OCC faculty define each General Education Outcome e.g. move away from nationally standardized tests and closer towards locally developed instruments.

2.2.5 Action Plan: Expand access to data on student learning for the entire college community including students.

2.2.6 Action Plan: Ensure that student learning assessment results are used to shape curriculum development, revision and pedagogy.

2.3  Objective: Develop and maintain appropriate Information Management Tools to support broad access and utilization of historical as well as current student learning data.

2.3.1 Action Plan: Expand access to and functionality of the Assessment Database to support decision making.

2.3.2 Action Plan: Create and maintain a database which supports broad access to student learning information specific to those courses which are approved for each General Education Outcome.

2.3.3 Action Plan: Incorporate student learning outcomes information into annual dashboard reports.

2.3.4 Action Plan: Maintain a robust website which provides historical as well as current information on all aspects of student learning assessment.

2.3.5 Action Plan: Require reports from individuals who attend HLC conferences and external assessment workshops which can subsequently be shared with the college community.
