Corequisite Courses

Corequisite courses provide enhanced support and instruction so that you can complete college-level courses within your first year of study.  This helps to eliminate barriers and builds academic bridges to success.

As a student new to Oakland Community College, you have the opportunity to complete your English and Math sequence faster, often in one or two semesters. This means you will graduate faster, use less financial aid, and have more course options during your first semester at OCC.

How Corequisite Courses Work

A "corequisite course" is a course students take with additional credit hours for instructor time and support. Corequisite courses can save both time and money. Here's how it works:

  • STEP 1Placement - For Math, placement is determined by your ALEKS or SAT score. For English, placement is determined by completing the English Guided Self-Placement. Check the Exemptions lists for Math and English
  • STEP 2OCC Counselor - Students new to OCC are required to meet with an OCC Counselor before enrolling in any courses, including a corequisite course. Every student is different, and the recommended course for you will depend on several factors: your placement score, intended career pathway, transfer plans, comfort level with the subject and previously completed prerequisite courses.
  • STEP 3 | Registration - Enroll in the “Enhanced” support sections. The additional credit hours are designed to enhance your academic success and help you navigate the course material with more time and support from your instructor in a smaller group setting. Corequisite courses that offer enhanced support are noted with an “E” in the course number.
