OCC's Assessment Definition
Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning.
It involves making our expectations clear to students and setting appropriate outcomes
for learning. It helps determine how well student performance matches those outcomes.
Student Outcomes Assessment Committee (SOAC)
The mission of the college-wide Student Outcomes Assessment Committee (SOAC) is to
implement student outcomes and assessment at all levels of the institution. As it
moves the college from content-centered to learner-centered and from teacher-centered
to student-centered, the assessment outcomes process enhances the quality of the learning
experience of students.
Faculty Assessment Facilitators
Faculty Assessment Facilitators work with the Office of Student Learning Assessment
to support faculty and staff implementation of course, program, general education
and co-curricular student learning assessment activities. The current Faculty Assessment
Facilitator at the college, Dr. Tatiana Reynolds, is a full-time faculty member in the Math discipline and works closely with the
Student Learning Assessment Office to guide, and improve, student learning assessment
practices at the college.
Program/Student Learning Coordinators
Program Coordinators and Student Learning Coordinators are OCC faculty that manage
all issues related to student learning assessment in their program or discipline.
These faculty work with academic administration and all full-time and adjunct faculty
to develop common course outcomes and assessment plans, submit assessment findings
and move assessment activities forward for their program or discipline. Program/Student
Learning Coordinators also work with the Office of Student Learning Assessment to
establish an appropriate plan of action relevant to their program or discipline’s
current stage of assessment development and to implement student learning assessment
Assessment Results Tracking Information System (ARTIS)
The Assessment Results Tracking Information System (ARTIS) is a web-based database
developed by Oakland Community College. This database is used by Program/Student Learning
Coordinators, Deans, Faculty Assessment Facilitators and the Office of Student Learning
Assessment to manage all aspects of student learning assessment, including establishing
common course outcomes and assessment plans, submitting assessment findings, and developing
and tracking action strategies.
