Concealed Pistol License (CPL)

Our 8-hour course of instruction takes students from the beginning of safe gun handling through actual range fire, regardless of prior training or experience. Our classroom and range instruction is taught by active-duty and retired Police Officers that are Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement (MCOLES) certified. The successful completion of this class enables you to apply for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License.

All students must bring the following items: 

  • A Firearm with any of the following calibers: 9mm, .38, .380, 40, .357, 45
  • Strong side Hip holster. No Cross draw or Shoulder holsters allowed
  • Magazine pouch carrier to hold extra magazines on your belt
  • Loose fitting clothing and Baseball Cap
  • Closed collar shirt to prevent brass falling inside
  • Personal Eye and Hearing Protection (available on-site)

What you need to know:

  • No open toe shoes allowed
  • Students must be at least 21 years old to attend class
  • Oakland Community College will supply ammo and lunch

Advanced Concealed Pistol License Level 1

This advanced class cannot be used to apply for your Michigan CCW/CPL License. Rental firearms and holster available, call for availability at (248) 232-4223. Ammo and lunch will be provided.

  • Small Tactical Style Flashlight - available on-site
  • Concealment attire capable of concealing weapon and holster, shirt, sweater, jacket
  • Baseball style Hat
  • Closed collar shirt to prevent brass falling inside
  • No open toe shoes allowed
  • Personal Eye and Hearing Protection (available on-site)

Advanced Concealed Pistol License Level 2

Force-on-Force Scenario Based Training

Instruction provided by the Oakland Police Academy's Firearms Staff who are comprised of individuals with extensive knowledge and years of experience conducting “force-on-force’, decision making and scenario-based training. 

Advanced Concealed Pistol License Level 2 will enhance the student's decision-making skills through Force-on-Force decision making scenarios which boost their skills that are necessary when confronted with a possible life-threatening situation while under stress. For this training, students will use converted weapons that fire nonlethal projectiles while engaging individuals that may or may not pose a threat. The Oakland Police Academy will provide all protective equipment (full face, throat and groin), marking cartridges, and converted weapon technology manufactured by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems®.

Required Apparel: Students need to wear loose fitting clothing, long-sleeve shirts and long pants, boots or gym shoes. No exposed skin or open toe shoes.

Students may be required to shoot from various firing positions (Standing, kneeling, sitting, prone). The course may include scenarios that may involve movement drills alone or in-concert with other students, reloading exercises and moving to and from cover. Students should also realize that they may be struck by a non-lethal projectile during scenarios. 

  • Students must have successfully completed the OCC Advanced CPL Level 1 course or its equivalent as other criteria for admittance
  • The Oakland Police Academy's Firearms Staff reserves the right to admit or deny individuals based on their skill level in previous CPL courses
  • Lunch will be supplied by Oakland Community College
