Program Title: Software Engineering Certificate

Program Description: The Computer Information Systems (CIS) certificates are designed for students who need specialty skills in a particular area of information technology that will help satisfy current of future employment requirements. Unlike associate degrees, certificate programs assume that students already have obtained or do not require general education skills and are now looking for education in a specific area of computer technology. Therefore, all of the courses within a certificate program are chosen to develop these specific technical skills in a shorter amount of time than what would be required in an associate degree program. All CIS courses use current computer tools and place an emphasis on practical application to provide a relevant learning environment. This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete all core requirements plus the list of courses for at least one focus area. A separate certificate is not awarded for each focus area. One certificate may be awarded from 1 to 4 types of focus areas.

Program Title: Pre-Engineering

Program Description: The Pre-Engineering program provides students with the academic foundation needed for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in engineering science. OCC offers three engineering focus areas – Electrical/Computer, Mechanical/Civil, and Industrial. Students earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and are prepared to enter their bachelor’s degree program with about half of the required credits already completed. Students are strongly encouraged to work with counselors at the intended transferring institution to maximize course transferability. Students must meet the requirements set by the institution they will transfer to. Completing the Pre-Engineering degree does not guarantee acceptance at another college or university. Although most students will transfer to a 4-year engineering institution, students who consider this to be their terminal degree are qualified to work as engineering technicians within the electrical, mechanical, computer, or industrial industry.

Program Title: Technological Sciences

Program Description: The Associate in Technological Sciences Degree program is designed for students choosing to pursue widely varying areas of occupational, technological, engineering, and emerging sector-related interests. This degree is also designed for career-minded students, yet includes flexibility to meet the Michigan Transfer Agreement for students wishing to continue their education with one of our many 4-year partner institutions. See a counselor for courses that may be required at the college you plan to attend. A minimum of sixteen credit hours in the primary occupational discipline of your choice, plus nineteen credits of fundamental General Education leaves you with twenty-seven elective credits (14 required) to design your future. Graduating from this program does not automatically qualify the student for the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) endorsement. Students in this program seeking MTA endorsement should work closely with an OCC counselor to identify classes from the MTA List which apply to the endorsement and to degree requirements.
