Courtroom Testimony Seminar
Instructor:
Stuart L. Fenton, Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Emmet County, Michigan. Mr. Fenton has been a prosecutor for over 30 years. He is a criminal prosecutor and trial specialist who is available for consultation and training in the art of criminal investigation and prosecution.
Course Objective:
To train police officers, detectives and prosecutors how to be confident and convincing witnesses on the witness stand when testifying, how to avoid common defense traps and pitfalls on cross exam, and to emphasize the importance of follow up, preparation and detail in police reports.
Brief Outline: This is a full one day course, consisting of three parts:
- Part 1 – Mock Trials: Officers testify on direct and cross exam to hypothetical cases. Winning strategies are taught on how to avoid common defense traps and be the most effective, persuasive witness possible.
- Part 2 – Lecture: Topics include importance of thorough and detailed investigations and report writing, 5th amendment law and interview techniques, and tips on how to be the most polished and effective witness.
- Part 3 – Trial Videos: Attendees witness the techniques discussed throughout the day exhibited in real,
live trial testimony from actual cases. The videos demonstrate and reinforce the principles
discussed earlier in an authentic setting, and bring it all home.
