Instructor:
Darnell Blackburn brings over 28 years of law enforcement experience, ranging from undercover investigations to statewide leadership with The Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). His combined frontline and administrative work gives him deep insight into how media interactions directly affect public trust and officer safety.
He holds a Psychology degree from Michigan State University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. As CEO of PRAT International LLC and an adjunct professor, Darnell trains agencies nationwide in communication, de-escalation, cultural competency, and leadership—core skills that support effective media engagement.
A nationally recognized speaker and the first Crime and Safety Expert for WDIV/Local 4 Detroit, he appears live on air each weekday, giving him first hand newsroom experience. This unique blend of law enforcement expertise and daily broadcast work makes him exceptionally qualified to teach media relations for law enforcement.
Course Description:
This course is aimed at improving law enforcement professionals' customer service skills. It focuses on respect, professionalism, empathy, and effective communication to enhance community relations. Participants will learn strategies for conflict resolution, active listening, managing tense situations, and reducing bias, all while fostering trust and upholding integrity and professionalism in every interaction.
