Teen Defensive Driving Essentials

Hands On Driver Safety & Hazard Avoidance Training

Course Description

This course equips new operators with the skills needed to anticipate hazards, understand vehicle dynamics, and respond confidently during unexpected driving situations. Training includes classroom instruction, hands on closed course drills, and a professional driving simulator session using the FAAC system.

Who Should Attend

Qualified Teen Drivers - Ages 16–19 with a State of Michigan, Level 2 Graduated License seeking elevated defensive driving skills and real-world emergency handling experience.

Classroom & Conceptual Foundations

  • Physics of Mass & Motion — How speed, weight transfer, and stopping distances affect control.
  • Visual Lead Time & Scanning — Training drivers to look 12–15 seconds ahead to identify hazards early.
  • Anatomy of Distraction — Understanding how phones, passengers, and in vehicle tech impact reaction time.
  • Zone Control & Space Management — Maintaining safe space and preserving escape paths.

Driving Simulator Block (FAAC System) - One Hour Instructional Session

FAAC Simulator Training Students engage in immersive, scenario based driving modules that replicate real world hazards in a controlled environment. Focus areas include:

  • Hazard anticipation
  • Reaction timing
  • Night and low-visibility driving
  • Emergency decision-making
  • Distraction and fatigue recognition

This block reinforces classroom concepts before students transition to live-vehicle drills.

Practical, Hands On Range Drills

  • Threshold & Emergency Braking: Maximum effort stopping to build confidence with ABS activation.
  • S Turn / Slalom Course: Develop smooth steering, proper hand over hand technique, and weight transfer awareness.
  • Distraction Mitigation Course: Experience how quickly control deteriorates when attention shifts.
  • Emergency Lane Change: Rapid evasive maneuvering without braking to simulate real world hazard avoidance.
  • Off Road Recovery (Wheel Drop): Learn controlled re-entry to prevent over correction and reduce rollover risk.
